How to prepare for different imaging ?
Preparation for ultrasonography:
- 6 hours of fasting before the exam
- Drink an ample amount of water to ensure a full bladder upon examination.
Preparation for Contrast enhanced CT scans:
- 6 hours of fasting before the exam
- Kidney function test 48 hours before the exam
- Document anti-hypertensive & oral hypoglycaemic
Preparation for MRI studies:
- 6 hours of fasting before the exam
- Kidney function test 48 hours before the exam
- Contraindications:
- Claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or anxiety.
- Removable dental work.
- Internal (implanted) defibrillator or pacemaker
- Cochlear (ear) implant
- Some types of clips used on brain aneurysms & Some types of metal coils placed within blood vessels
- Artificial heart valves & Implanted electronic devices, including a cardiac
- pacemaker
- Implanted drug infusion ports
- Artificial limbs or metallic joint prostheses
- Implanted nerve stimulators
- Metal pins, screws, plates, stents, or surgical staples
Note that:
- A recently placed artificial joint may require the use of another imaging procedure. If there is any doubt of their presence, an x-ray may be taken to detect and identify any metal objects.
- Patients with metal objects in certain parts of their bodies may also require an X-ray before an MRI.
- Jewelry, watches, credit cards, and hearing aids can all be damaged.
- Pins, hairpins, metal zippers, and similar metallic items can distort MRI images.
- You have to bring your previous studies for comparison.
