Four mutations of the virus, associated with increasing symptoms severity, were discovered
The study, that was published in the Scientific Report journal, is a collaborative work of 57357’s Genomics Research Program, the Center for Research and Regenerative Medicine (ECRRM), and Kasr Al‑Aini School of Medicine, Cairo University. It was implemented within the frame work of the researchers’ pursuit to monitor and investigate the spread and evolution of COVID-19 virus so they can predict its mutations, changes in the viral genome, and possibly put future plans to face it. The research team identified the circulating strains in Egypt at the time of the study and discovered 4 mutations within patients’ samples, which are related to the severity of the infection and symptoms.
This research aims to identify the nature of the virus and how it develops through discovering its different mutations, which may help us predict its behavior and severity, accordingly scientists can put appropriate plan to deal with the disease in terms of developing vaccines and management methods.
According to Dr. Galal, the second stage of this research will depend on analyzing the third and fourth wave samples, to discover the virus’s new mutations.
