Why do some critically ill COVID-19 patients die while others survive? This is a question that occupied a research team at Hospital 57357, and they succeeded in uncovering its answer through a study conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at Kasr Al-Aini, and recently published in the journal Frontiers in Biosciences.

The study – as stated by Dr. Sameh Saad, head of the Tumor Biology Unit at Hospital 57357 – found that some COVID patients with critical conditions suffer from a severe lack of oxygen in the body, which leads to an increase in the level of chemical compounds in the blood called lactate. While not harmful in themselves, their increase and accumulation causes an increase in blood acidity, which is a dangerous condition that causes major problems such as lung damage, and subsequently leads to death in patients with severe coronavirus infection.

Through this research, we succeeded in measuring specific laboratory indicators that reveal the high level of lactate in the blood, which warns of an increase in the proportion of acidity, a deterioration of the condition, and exposure to death.

Dr. Sameh Saad confirms that the success of this research opens the door for designing different treatment methods to deal with these dangerous cases early, according to the results of the indicators that are measured in the laboratory. He also confirms that scientists are discovering new secrets about the COVID virus every day, and that the study of COVID has stimulated the minds of scientists to discover relationships that no one had paid attention to before, and we can now use them in the study of other diseases.
