Clinical nutrition department set up a nutrition clinic that caters to adults patients starting May 2019.

Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gulsen Saleh, head of clinical nutrition department, Hospital 57357

Purpose of setting up the clinic:

• Improving nutritional status of patient suffering from cancer, and reducing side effects of the treatment. Research studies reveal that following up the nutritional condition of the patient as early as the confirmation of the diagnosis, providing adequate nutritional support will improve patient outcome and chances of cure and reduce side effects of treatment such as vomiting, diarrhea, and repeated inflammatory episodes.
• Also, studies indicate that malnutrition affects the patient’s health and illness condition and increases the chances of complications, and decrease the cure rate.

• Recent research studies indicate that Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a loss of bone density, which can contribute to osteoporosis and fractures . It can also cause osteomalacia, which is lean bones. Lean bones are weak bones that cause pain and muscle weakness
• Severe vitamin D deficiency can also lead to other diseases. In children, it can cause rickets. Rickets is a rare disease that causes the bones to become soft and bend. In women, it can cause hair loss and headaches.
• Researchers are studying vitamin D for its possible connections to several medical conditions, including diabetes, drug-resistant high blood pressure, cancer, resisting obesity, depression, insomnia and autoimmune conditions.

• A service provided by the Personalized Medication Management unit of 57357’s pharmaceutical services department to check on the effects of drugs on patients in order to counteract and reduce their toxicity while increasing their efficacy, ultimately ensuring patient safety. As we are monitoring serum levels of chemo therapies like Methotrexate, antibiotics like Amikacin and Vancomycin, antifungals like Voriconazole and Posaconazole, anti epileptics like Phenytion and Valproic acid, immunosuppressants like Cyclosporin, Cardiac glycosides like Digoxin.


• Among the advantages of the unit, is its quick delivery of the service at the same day. The result takes around 1 hour for all medication levels except for Voriconazole and Posaconazole. Beside being the only one to perform therapeutic drug monitoring for Voriconazole and Posaconazole serum level.
